Auch wenn die Sprache des NLP anders als die mathematische Sprache gestaltet ist, verfolgen beide ähnliche Ziele. Viele Prinzipien und Modelle des NLP haben ihre Wurzeln in der Mathematik. Linguist [[John Grindler]] und Informatiker [[Richard Bandler]] verfolgten mit der Begründung des NLPs das Ziel einer Wissenschaft zu formulieren, die formal, strikt und präzise ist. NLP bedient sich auch mathematischen Modellen, um therapeutische Modelle zu entwickeln.
